October arrives, and we’re thrilled to witness the annual transformation of the trees. Fall brings its signature hues of yellow, orange, and red, marking the end of summer and welcoming a cooler, more contemplative season. The aroma of pumpkin desserts fills our homes as we observe the daily metamorphosis of trees and the graceful descent of their leaves, creating an unparalleled landscape.
While the exact cause of this color change in trees remains a mystery for many, the reality is that, like any living being, trees develop strategies to adapt to seasonal changes. One such adaptation is the coloration of their leaves, as trees begin to enter a state of hibernation or survival during the winter months. In other words, we’re witnessing trees “falling asleep” to weather the cold season.
This process is characterized by the concentration of the tree’s energy and water reserves in its most vital areas: the trunk and roots. As a result, trees need to shed any unnecessary elements, such as leaves. When the exchange of energy and water stops in the leaves, photosynthesis ceases. Consequently, the production of chlorophyll (the green pigment) halts, allowing other substances present in the leaves, like carotenoids (orange pigment) and anthocyanins (red pigment), to become visible. This creates stunning natural scenes.
Isn’t it fascinating? And what if we told you that we can go beyond simply admiring this spectacle and realize that trees not only dazzle us with their magnificence but also, as our teachers, invite us to embrace the spirit of the season. They encourage us to turn down the noise of the outside world and transform ourselves by letting go of what no longer serves us. If this resonates with you and you’d like to align with the energy of this season, here’s a simple ritual to help you shed your own unnecessary “leaves” and strengthen your roots, just like the trees:
A Simple Ritual for Letting Go
Materials: Paper, pen, a fireproof bowl, and a lighter.
Instructions: Find a quiet space. If possible, play some relaxing music *. Take three deep breaths and, with each inhale, center yourself in the present moment. Take the paper and pen and begin your letter by writing:
Today, I am grateful for my life, for reaching this point, and I acknowledge all that I am ready to release, especially…
Let your words flow freely. Allow everything that comes to mind to surface. This is your opportunity for honesty and release, so take your time and express yourself fully. When you feel complete, sign and date the letter. Finally, carefully burn the letter in the fireproof bowl, symbolizing the release of what no longer serves you.
* We recommend our Spotify playlist.
